What we plan to do in our greenhouses :-)

In addition to concerns of space limitations, drought, flooding, etc., with conventional farming techniques, foods are often nutritionally deficient, chemically processed, and genetically altered. On the other hand, aquaponic farming techniques produce high quality, nutrient-rich organic foods, with greater yields in smaller spaces. Produce and fish are grown in a closed recirculating system that complements both vegetation and fish.

Since plants do not have to compete for water or nutrients, they are planted more densely and give higher yields. A new Israeli-developed (by Yissum Research and Development Company at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem) natural pest-control, based on naturally-occurring yeast, isolated from strawberry leaves, is used to aid in controlling pests in the greenhouse. Seed harvesting ensures future crops. This type of growing ensures food security and a cushion from many outside factors which drive the cost of food up and the quality down.

In the greenhouse, on the main floor, will be set up an aquaponic system, consisting of fish production tanks and grow beds. On the second level, there will be hanging gardens, growing from the top downward, in order to maximize space and yield. Additionally, a smokehouse will be "connected" with the greenhouse, enabling us to control temperatures and humidity year-round, enabling us to grow cold weather crops and even tropical crops, no matter the environment outside the greenhouses.
